Marta Gomez’s new CD “Cantos De Agua Dulce”
(Chesky Records) was #10 and #12 on the Billboard jazz charts
of January 2005 and it has been nominated for the Billboard Latin
Awards as the best Latin Jazz CD of the year. Her CD "Solo
Es Vivir" (BigSur records) was chosen by The Boston Globe
as one of the 10 Best CDs of 2003. Her song “La Ronda”
was included in the Putumayo World Music compilation entitled
“Women of Latin America” and her song “Paula
Ausente” won the SIBL International song-writing contest
as the best song inspired by a South American book and it was
included on a CD among others by artist such as Tom Waits and
David Bowie. On May 2004, WGBH’s (National Public Television)
show “La plaza” featured Marta as the artist of the
month and on December 2004 she was interviewed by Steve Inskeep
on National Public Radio. But in spite of all that, critics dare
to say the musical success of singer-songwriter Marta Gomez, is
just starting. There is something unique about her voice and her
songs that no one can resist. Marta not only traverses a whole
range of rhythms from Latin America mixed with jazz and pop, but
she also writes the kind of melody and refrain that translates
across whatever language she is singing in. This may be the reason
that led Marta to share the stage with artists of such diverse
genres such as Bonnie Raitt, John Mayer and Argentinean diva Mercedes
Sosa. With more than 70 original compositions, Marta’s songs
have been performed and recorded by many artists around the world
and some of them have been used for independent films. And with
much more to come, Marta Gomez is a name that we will hear for
a long, long time.
So
you have been nominated for Latin Jazz Album of the Year in the
2005 Billboard Latin Music Awards….How nervous are you?
I am not nervous at all really, I am just too excited and I think
about it every day. I do know that it is already very important
that I have been nominated but I also really want to win!!! I
think it would help my career in such a good way that also many
more people would have access to my music... Although, to be nominated
with Paco de Lucia makes me nervous more than the nomination it
self.... he is one of my biggest idols.
If
you get chosen as the winner what will your next key career move
be?
I am not sure how important it is to win the Billboard award for
the media or the booking agencies. I am looking for someone who
can help me with my bookings, so probably that will help. But
in terms of my personal desires, I just want to continue doing
what I am doing right now: singing, composing and traveling. I
don’t ask for much more, just to be able to make a living
out of singing is a blessing for me.
Do
you feel that all of your hard work is paying off?
Yes, definately I am starting to see the result of all my effort.
I think when you work so hard and you love what you do and you
believe in yourself, that pays off and I feel that is my case!
How
long have you been in the music industry?
Well, I started singing for radio and TV in Colombia when I was
seven years old, So I suppose since then! With this group of folkloric
music we have been playing since the year 2000.
What
is your favorite song from the album that was nominated “Cantos
De Agua”?
“Eso Pido Yo”
Why is that song your favorite?
It is a very sad songs and I love sad, melancholic songs…
it is just a very quiet song, I like it very much.
Do
you write all of your own music?
I write most of my repertoire. In my last CD “Cantos De
Agua Dulce” I wanted to include two covers because many
people would not know me and I wanted them to relate the music
to something so I chose to do a song by Spanish composer Joan
Manuel Serrat and by Venezuelan singer Simon Diaz. In my shows
I do those two songs plus a traditional Peruvian song, the rest
is mine.
How
would you describe your music in your own words?
My music is a mix between folkloric rhythms from Latin America
adding pop and jazz elements.
Is
your music exclusively in Spanish or do you have English songs
too?
I have two songs in English. One of them is actually half English
and half Spanish and I composed for my good friend Livingston
Taylor for us to sing it together ... I am very open in that aspect,
it is simply that my language is Spanish, I dream in Spanish,
so It comes easier for me to write in Spanish, but I am not closed
minded to the idea of writing in English.
How do you feel that everyone has treated you since you started
in the music biz?
In general I have been very lucky. I work mainly with Americans
and I get the sense that in this country music business people
are nicer than in some South American countries, I don’t
know the reason but they tend to respect the new artists more.
I have been treated with much respect here always. Also I feel
Americans are very open to hear music that is not from here and
in their language (more open to try new things from another culture).
Is
there any new albums, demos, videos or anything else that is scheduled
to be released in 2005?
Well, with Chesky Records I have a three album contract, so we
are supposed to record the new album soon. It will probably be
released later in 2005 or early 2006. I also wrote a book for
beginner singers that will be released in a couple of months by
Music Sales Latino. The book is in Spanish and it will be sold
here, and in Latin America. It helps beginners to learn how to
sing with good techniques.

How do you promote your music & website?
I perform a lot. I have regular shows in Boston, NYC, LA, Florida,
Colombia, Argentina, Virginia and other places, that is the best
way to promote yourself. My website helps a lot too.
What
radio stations are currently playing your songs?
I am not sure of how many radio stations play my music but I do
know that many people have learned of me from radio so, probably
many world music stations play my songs, I do know of NPR, WGBH
and WBAI.
What
do you hope to accomplish before the end of 2005?
I live my career and my life step by step, so I don’t dream
far away.. I work hard one step at a time. I am happy singing
and traveling, everything else is just a result of working hard.

Is
there anything that you want to say to your fans and other up

Yes, that they have to believe in themselves and love what they
do. That is the only way they can be successful.

El
segundo trabajo discogafico de la cantante Colombiana Marta Gomez
titulado "Solo Es Vivir" fue escogido por el Boston
Globe dentro de las 10 mejores del 2003. Su nuevo disco “Cantos
de Agua Dulce” lanzado por la la prestigiosa casa discografica
Chesky Records en Noviembre de 2004, estuvo incluido en las listas
de los 10 mejores CDs del año pasado por las listas Europeas
de World Music y por las listas Billboard quienes lo catalogaron
como el décimo CD mas vendido en el mundo en la categoria
de Jazz. Mas tarde en Febrero de 2005 ser nominado por los prestigiosos
Premios Billboard de la Musica Latina como mejor CD Latin Jazz
del año junto a Paco de Lucia, Nestor Torres, Charlie Headen
y Gonzalo Rubalcaba, todos éstos artistas con una trayectoria
muy larga e importante en la industria musical. En el 2004, la
cancion “La Ronda” compuesta por Marta estuvo incluida
en un CD de la coleccion Putumayo World Music titulado “Women
from Altin America” junto a otras cantantes de su genero
como Susana Baca, Totó La Momposina, Eva Ayllón
y Mercedes Sosa. Asimismo su cancion “Paula Ausente”
dedicada a la prestigiosa escritora Chilena Isabel Allende, basa
en su libro “Paula” gano el concurso internacional
SIBL Project como mejor cancion inspirada en un libro Latino Americano
y fue incluida en un CD junto a otras de artistas como Tom Waits
y David Bowie. Marta tuvo la oportunidad de interpretar esta cancion
frente a Isabel el Noviembre pasado. En Mayo del mismo año
el canal de television publica de Los Estados Unidos WGBH’s
escogio a la Colombiana como la artista del mes en su programa
“La Plaza” y la radio publica nacional del mismo pais
NPR hizo lo mismo, haciendo un maravilloso reportage sobre Marta
enfocandose en el hecho de ser colombiana y de enfrentar la violencia
en carne propia. El director de este programa que tuvo la oportunidad
de entrevistar a Marta, se sorprendio al ver que a pesar de vivir
la violencia en forma directa e indirecta , Marta se habia radicado
en los Estados Unidos para componer y cantar musica colombiana
que llevan mensajes de paz y cuentan las historias de esa otra
gente de su patria, la gente luchadora que ha aprendido milagrosamente
a vivir con alegria y a tenerlo todo muchas veces, no tendiendo
nada. Seguramente muchas cosas le esperan a esta joven caleña
en su carrera musical que a pesar de cantar desde los 6 años
de edad, apenas comienza a darse a conocer en el mundo entero,
recibiendo las mejores criticas por parte de audiencias y criticos
de todas las nacionalidades y lenguas. Hay algo unico en Marta,
en su voz y en sus canciones que nadie puede resistir. El periodico
Boston Herald la llamo una cantante con una “exquisita voz”
que “tiene un sonido tradicionalmente folklorico y a la
vez mezclar elementos del jazz y del pop” El Boston Globe
escribio que Marta “mezcla su cedosa voz con letras apasionadas,
creando un sonido unico en el jazz Sur Americano”. La verdad
es que Marta no solo cubre un extenso rango de ritmos de Latino
America incorporando elementos del jazz y del pop sino que tambien
escribe versos de tal intensidad, que son entendidos y acepatdos
por todas las audiencias, sin importar el lenguage que éstas
hablen. Quizas fué ésta la causa que llevo a Marta
abrir el concierto de la cantante de blues norteamericana Bonnie
Raitt y el joven ganador del Grammy John Mayer en el teatro Orpheum
en 2003 ; mas tarde el mismo año, fue la invitada especial
en el concierto de la gran cantante argentina Mercedes Sosa y
en el 2004 a compartir el escenario con otra grande de su pais
Toto la momposina. Marta, orgullosamente Colombiana y de tan solo
26 años de edad, decidio viajar a los Estados Unidos en
1999 para asistir a la reconocida escuela de musica Berklee College
of Music donde recibio la beca "Best Achievement Scholarship"
y el premio de composicion "Alex Ulanowsky" antes de
graduarse con honores. Siendo la composicion su enfoque, y con
mas de 70 canciones, algunos de sus temas han sido interpretados
por artistas de todo el mundo y utilizados en documentales y cortometrajes.
Con un futuro prometedor ante si, todo parece indicar que escucharemos
el nombre de Marta Gomez por mucho, mucho tiempo mas.
En
los premios billboard de la musica latina del 2005 eres nominada
para album de jazz latino del año, como te sientes?
No estoy nerviosa realmente, lo que estoy es anciosa y pienso
en eso todo el tiempo. Yo se que el solo hecho de estar nominada
es un honor pero en verdad me pareceria buenisimo ganar el premio,
creo que le ayudaria mucho a mi carrera en estos momentos y me
ayudaria a promover mi musica entre mas gente. Lo que si me pone
nerviosa es estar nominada junto a Paco De Lucia que es uno de
mis idolos.
Si te eligen como ganadora,cuales seran tus planes?
No estoy segura de que tan importante sea este premio para los
medios o para las agencias de management. Yo necesito ahora ayuda
en ese aspecto porque hasta ahora soy yo la que se encarga de
todo el manejo del grupo. En es aspecto personal, yo no tengo
muchos planes, trabajo poco a poco y con el solo poder seguir
cantando y viajando y viviendo de la musica, me siento satisfecha!
Sientes que todos tus esfuerzos se estan realisando?
Si, definitiamente si. Siento que todo el esfuerzo y la dedication
de tantos años, empieza a dar sus frutos , yo creo que
cuando uno trabaja tanto y hace lo que ama y cree en uno mismo,
lo demas viene por anadidura.
Cuanto
tiempo llevas en la industria musical?
Bueno, Yo empece cantando para radio y TV en Colombia desde que
tenia 7 años asi que desde entonces estoy vinculada al
mundo de la musica, coneste grupo llevo desde el año 2000.

Por
que esa cancion es tu favorita?
Es una cancion muy triste, muy melancolica y a mi me encantan
las canciones asi, que te hagan llorar, pensar, extrañar..
Compones
toda tu musica?
Escribo casi todo lo que canto. En el ultimo Cd “Cantos
De Agua Dulce:” quise incluir dos temas que no son mios,
uno de Joan Manuel Serrat y elotro de Simon Diaz porque queria
que la gente que no me conocia estuviera algun punto de referencia.
En mis shows canto esas dos canciones y una tradicional Peruana.
En
tus propias palabras, como describirias tu musica?
Mi musica es una mezcla entre los ritmos folcloricos de Latino
America y el jazz y el pop.
Tu
musica es exclusivamente en español o tambien en ingles?
Tengo dos canciones en Ingles, una es toda en Ingles y la otra
es mitad Ingles mitad Espanol y la compuse para mi amigo el cantante
Livingston Taylor para que la cantarasmos los dos. Soy muy abierta
a todo y no melimito pero el Español es mi idioma, yo sueño
en Español asi que por ahora me queda mucho mas facil y
mas natural escribir en mi idioma.
Como te han tratado la gente desde que comensastes en tu carera
musical?
Me siento muy afortunada porque en este pais me han tratado con
mas respeto que incluso en otros paises de Latino America. Me
siento muy respetada y siento que los americanos son muy abiertos
a artistas que canten otro tipo de musica y en otro idioma.
Algunos
projectos nuevos, demos, videos o cualguier otra cosa para el
año 2005?
Con Chesky tengo un contrato de 3 cds asi que en teoria ya empezaremos
a grabar el nuevo CD m uy pronto, no se cuando se lanzara depronto
a fines del 2005 o a principios del 2006. Tambien se publicara
un libro que escribi para los principiantes que quieran estudiar
canto y quieran aprender un poco de tecnica vocal. El libro se
publicara bajo “Music Sales Latino” y es en Español
y se venderan en USA y Latino America.

Como
promueves tu musica y website?
Yo trato de dar muchos conciertos en USA, Colombia y Argentina,
esa es verdaderamente la mejor manera de promover la musica y
tambien la pagina de internet ayuda mucho.
Cual
estasiones de radio estan presentemente tocando tu musica?
Hay muchas radios que promueven mi musica pero no estoy segura
de cuantas exactamente, se que NPR, WGBH y WBAI ponen my CD frecuentmeente.
Que
esperas lograr antes de terminar el año 2005?
Yo vivo mi vida y mi carrera poco a poco, paso a paso asi que
no sueño a largo plazo, sino que trabajo duro para alcanzar
pequenas metas.. quiero seguir cantanto, componiendo y viajando,
no pido mucho mas!

Hay algo que quieres dicir al publico o a otros musicos?
Si, que tienen que creer en ellos mismos y hacer lo que aman y
amar lo que hacen, esa es la unica manera de lograr el exito y
