Who is in your group and what do they do or play?
In general I perform with the company of just my guitar...Sometimes, however, I perform with some musicians from Seattle, such as Diego Coy who plays wind instruments, Pablo Sepulveda who plays the flute, Normando Brenis who plays the acoustic guitar, and Fernanado Allende who plays percussion. Everything depends on the type of show I will perform in.

Where did your name originate and what does it mean to you?
Marco is in Latin and it means warrior

How would you describe your music in your own words?
It’s a mix of latin american music, poetry and ballad. I also do music for children.

Is your music exclusively in Spanish or do you have English songs too?
I like mixing English and Spanish in shows, I think that that’s necessary for good communication with the public. In addition, I am a music and Spanish teacher.

How do you feel that everyone has treated you since you started in the music biz?
Extremely well. However, I think that my artistic career is divided into two periods, the one in Chile and the one here in the United States. In Chile I played mostly folk music that was very direct, it wasn’t as poetic. Here I’ve had to change my scheme and make it more international and multicultural. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities that have been given to me here.

Is there any new albums, demos, videos or anything else that is scheduled to be released in 2005?
Each and every day I am faced with a new crazy thing. I’m recording many new songs and I’m going to be part of a DVD especially designed for kids.

How do you promote your music & website?
In the CD “Marco Cortes: Latin American Music and Children’s songs” the website is mentioned a couple of times, in the front and in the back. In my shows and advertisements I try to talk about it as well.

What radio stations are currently playing your songs?
My music can be heard in many radio stations in Chile and some here in the state of Washington. It’s hard for me to know exactly who is playing my music and when. I get e-mails from people all over the world who tell me they’ve heard my music in radio stations online. It’s crazy!

What do you hope to accomplish before the end of 2005?
This year I hope to do a lot of shows in other states and to make and record more music. I want to keep working a lot.

Is there anything that you want to say to your fans and other up and coming musicians?
It is important to have a lot of respect for the diversity in cultures. I love seeing people who don’t know any Spanish come to my shows and then walk out knowing how to greet other people or understanding a little more the way we Latinos are and our music. I think Latinos should make an effort to always learn more English and for Americans to learn more Spanish, that way you can get the most out of both cultures and styles of music.

Biography:
I was born in Santiago de Chile and I’m a Spanish and music teacher and professor. I like all types of music, especially if it’s acoustic… I’m a big fan of The Beatles and Queen.

Discography:
I’ve recorded some albums in Chile “Me gusta la gente” (“I Love People”), “Viaje por tierra adentro” (“Traveling to the Center of the Earth”), “Resumen” (“Summary”) among many others. Here in the United Sates I’ve done “Todo es diferente” (“Everything is Different”) and most recently “Marco Cortes: Latin American Music and Children’s Songs.

Influences:
Joan Manuel Serrat, Violeta Parra and Victor Jara.

Quien esta en tu grupo y que instrumentos tocan?
Por lo general, actuo solo acompañado de mi guitarra electro-acustica.Tambien actuo acompañado de algunos musicos de Seattle, como Diego Coy en vientos andinos, Pablo Sepulveda en flauta traversa, Normando Brenis en guitarra acustica y Fernando Allende en percusion. Todo depende del show a realizar.

Cuando fue originado tu nombre y cual es el significado?
Marco es un nombre que esta en Latin y significa “guerrero”.

En tus propias palabras, como describirias tu musica?
Es una mezcla de musica latinoamericana, poesia y balada pop. Tambien hago musica para niños.

Tu musica es exclusivamente en español o tambien en ingles?
Me gusta mezclar el ingles y el español en los shows… Creo que es muy importante para una buena comunicacion con el publico. Ademas soy profesor de musica y de idioma español.

Como te han tratado la gente desde que comensastes en tu carera musical?
Muy bien. Claro que mi carrera artistica se debe dividir en el periodo de Chile y a otro desarrollado en los EEUU...En Chile era mas bien un folklorista con canciones muy directas. Aquí he tenidos que cambiar mi esquema musical y hacerlo mas internacional y multicultural. Estoy muy agradecido de las oportunidades que me han brindado.

Algunos projectos nuevos, demos, videos o cualguier otra cosa para el año 2005?
Todos los dias y a cada minuto tengo una locura nueva…..Estoy grabando muchas canciones nuevas y participare en la grabacion de un DVD especial para publico infantil.

Cual estasiones de radio estan presentemente tocando tu musica?
Se escucha en algunas emisoras de Chile y algunas del Estado de WA....Es dificil para mi saber exactamente quien o quienes tocan mis canciones....Recibo emails de varias partes del mundo y me cuentan que escucharon canciones mias en radios conectadas a internet.

Que esperas lograr antes de terminar el año 2005?
Hacer presentaciones en otros Estados de los EEUU, componer y grabar mucho... Seguir trabajando mucho.

Hay algo que quieres dicir al publico o a otros musicos?
Creo que es muy importante el respeto a la diversidad cultural.....Me gusta mucho cuando a mis actuaciones asiste publico que no habla nada de español y salen haciendo saludos o entendiendo un poco mas a los latinoamericanos y su musica.....Que los latinos hablen un poco de ingles y los norteamericanos un poco de español, para facilitar buenas mezclas musicales y culturales.

Biografia:
Naci en Santigo de Chile, soy profesor de español y de musica...Me gusta todo tipo de musica , especialmente lo acustico..
Soy un fanatico de Los Beatles y del grupo Queen.
